Riot or Revolution
Synopsis
One hour Documentary to air on ABC TV in 2005.
'Riot or Revolution' tells the story of the Eureka Stockade, 1854. It examines both the causes and the consequences of the rebellion, asking if it was really just a riot or did it have revolutionary potential. The film makes extensive use of the rich pictorial record of the goldfields era and has interviews with all the leading historians on the subject.
It also makes creative use of the many wonderful eyewitness accounts of Eureka which provide the text for an impressive cast. Indeed, much of the story is told through the eyes of three main characters that the film brings to life - Governor Hotham, the rebel leader Raffaello Carboni and Samuel Douglas, Smyth Huyghue who was chief clerk to Robert Rede, the Goldfields Commissioner in Ballarat.
