Avoca
The main street of Avoca has maintained an historic facade that harkens back to Avoca’s goldrush days. A petanque piste takes pride of place as you move through the township and past the old Avoca Cemetery. The old railway line and station reminds visitors that little town was once the centre of Victoria’s goldrush activity.
History
Gold was first found in Victoria in 1849 in the Pyrenees Ranges near Avoca. In 1853 fold was found at Four Mile Flat near Avoca and the main lead at Avoca itself was opened up a few months after that. By June the following year, Avoca, with a population of 16,000 people was regarded as one of Victoria’s more important gold rush districts.
