Glenorchy
Glenorchy is a small township of Northern Grampians Shire and is a local service centre that supports the surrounding rural community, including a Primary School and Post Office. With historic buildings and a close knit community, Glenorchy has a unique landscape offering Wimmera Plain Box Ironbark forest with intermittent stands of Red Gum, as well as open grazing and cropping.
History
Glenorchy, the Northern Grampians Shire's first urban centre grew up around the Four Post Inn, established on Ledcourt by John Gleeson in 1847 beside a waterhole on the Wimmera River and upstream of a bullock drivers' camp. A shanty village arose consisting of a store, smithy and, in 1849, a post office. The township was surveyed in 1850 by Robert Buchanan who named it after his home Scotland, and the first allotments sale was in August.
